FEATURING THE WORLD’S LEADING MINDFULNESS EXPERTS

Overwhelmed with insomnia and an incurable autoimmune disease, Shannon Harvey needed to make a change. But while the award-winning health journalist found plenty of recommendations on diet, sleep and exercise, when she looked for the equivalent of a 30-minute workout for her mental wellbeing, there was nothing.

Worried for the future mental health of her kids who were growing up amidst epidemics of stress, anxiety, depression and addiction, in a world-first experiment, Shannon recruited a team of scientists to put mindful meditation to the test. But after a 30,000 kilometre journey from the bright lights of Manhattan to the dusty refugee camps of the Middle East, what begins as a self-experiment, transforms into a life-changing experience.

My Year of Living Mindfully is filled with compelling stories, interviews with 18 leading scientists, and unexpected insights that go to the heart of what it means to be human in the twenty-first century.

MORE ABOUT THE MOMENTS OF REFUGE PROJECT

The inter-generational mental health crisis that has emerged from the global human rights crisis of forced displacement requires that we act now. To do our part, we have launched the Moments of Refuge Project  – a global project to study the impact of Mindfulness-Based Trauma Recovery for Refugees (MBTR-R) on the mental-, physical- and inter-generational health of refugees and asylum seekers around the world.

Although we believe that MBTR-R will be a transformative innovation in refugee mental health, our good intentions and initial randomized control clinical trial findings are not enough. We must now conduct ambitious, rigorous and compassionate scientific study of MBTR-R among diverse populations of forcibly displaced people in urban re-settlement and refugee camp settings around the world.

We believe that we can and will bring moments of refuge to  the lives of millions of refugees and asylum seekers. To do so, we need your help, and in particular, funding to support this massive multi-site, multi-team effort over the next 5+ years. We are now working to raise an estimated $4-5 million to support our intervention and research teams in N. America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Together, we can work to transform the lives and communities of refugees and asylum seekers across the world, one moment at a time.

MORE ABOUT THE OBSERVING MINDS LAB

Through science and practice, our Observing Minds Laboratory is dedicated to helping those who struggle and suffer live better lives. Our lab’s research has focused on how mental health and illness are shaped by the ways in which we process, experience and respond to our internal states (e.g., thought, emotion, physical sensations). More specifically, our lab’s work has focused on (i) developing methods to optimally measure and study the psychological processes that characterize our internal mental lives; (ii) applying these methods to advance our understanding of these processes and mental health; and thereby (iii) developing novel and effective means to therapeutically target these processes so as to cultivate mental health.
